Divorce is never easy and most have at least one primary battleground issue. For a prominent local businessman, the issue of child custody became the focal point in his divorce. The man’s wife was having an affair and, when filing for divorce, the wife continuously lied to the children and her attorney and even tapped into the equity in the family home to help fund some of her boyfriend’s extensive debt and lavish lifestyle.
The businessman needed not only to protect his children (all under the age of 10 at the time) but also needed to protect the assets of a multi-generation family business, which had successfully operated in West Chester for more than 50 years. MacElree Harvey attorney Lance Nelson represented the husband using a steady and firm approach to move through negotiations and to secure a favorable outcome for his client.
The husband in the situation explains, “While I was ready to wage a fight over every small detail, Lance demonstrated repeatedly that keeping a cool head, remaining calm and remaining firm was the optimal way to proceed.” He continues, “Lance always kept the big picture in mind, remained very focused and was persistent in holding his ground.” The case ended with the husband sharing custody of the children equally with his former wife and holding on to the family home, the family business and cash reserves.
